Root canal treatment in The Hague

Every tooth contains living tissue with nerves and blood vessels. If it becomes inflamed by bacteria or damage, it can be very painful. With root canal treatment we remove the inflamed tissue and you keep your own tooth.

What does root canal treatment involve?

Under local anaesthetic we clean the root canals, rinse them and then seal them. The treatment may take one or more appointments.

After treatment a tooth can be more brittle. We often recommend a crown for extra strength.

When do you need root canal treatment?

With throbbing pain, long-lasting sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling or a tooth that changes colour.

  • With throbbing or nagging pain that persists.

  • If a tooth stays sensitive to heat or cold for a long time.

  • With pain when biting or chewing.

  • With swelling or a small bump on the gum.

  • If a tooth discolours after a blow or fall.

  • With a deep cavity that reaches close to the nerve.

How do we approach root canal treatment?

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Diagnosis

With an X-ray and tests we determine whether the nerve is inflamed or dead.

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Anaesthesia

We numb the tooth well so the treatment is not painful.

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Cleaning the canals

We remove the inflamed nerve and clean and shape the root canals.

  4. 4

    Step 4

    Disinfection

Rinsing kills the bacteria. Sometimes we first place a temporary medicine.

  5. 5

    Step 5

    Filling

The canals are sealed airtight so bacteria no longer get a chance.

  6. 6

    Step 6

    Restoring the tooth

With a filling or crown we make the tooth strong again.

Keeping your own tooth

A root canal treatment sounds daunting, but is often the best way to save a tooth.

01

Less pain than you think

With good anaesthesia it often feels like a normal filling. Usually it relieves the pain.

02

After treatment

The tooth may be sensitive for a few days. A regular painkiller usually helps.

03

Protection

A treated tooth is more brittle. A crown often prevents it from breaking later.

What does root canal treatment cost?

Dental fees in the Netherlands are set by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa). You receive an explanation of the costs before any treatment, and a quote for larger treatments. What your health insurer covers depends on your policy.
